Findlater Roper

 Racing Reminiscences - S C Burke

Not many of the men who are racing today can remember Mr. Roper. He was always a conspicuous figure on a race course. He invariably wore a tight-fitting frock coat, and shepherd's plaid trousers - a high collar and stock tie with a silk hat and a monocle. A fine gentleman and sportsman and a rare judge of a horse - we could do with a few more racing owners of his sort in these degenerate days.

Turf Notes
There will be many at Kingston races who will look in vain for his well known spare figure, always attired in that well fitting blue frock coat, check trousers and tall hat, and the inevitable eye glass screwed in one eye. Mr. Roper was a genuine sportsman who loved a good horse for a good horse's sake, and there are few men who have done more for the breed of horses in Jamaica than he has. A rare good judge of a horse and a pious believer in a good pedigree, he had established at Unity Valley perhaps the best breeding stud in the Island.
